Paul Newman plays against type in this excellent drama about the dying values of the old West, set in modern day (circa 1963) Texas. Newman is a no good son, who's more interested in drinking, womanizing, and carrying on than helping his aging and principled father (Douglas) tend to his cattle farm. The two don't see eye to eye on anything. Add to this mix an excellent performance by Patricia Neal as the housekeeper (who Hud has his eyes on too) and the young nephew who initially looks up to Hud (played by Brandon De Wilde, 10 years after his role as the young boy in Shane), and you have enough drama and bite to make this movie a classic.
