76ers' head coach Larry
Brown is surprised to find
Allen Iverson standing
behind him as Brown
was being interviewed.

Allen and Larry

Sat, 2/10: One after another, the All-Star Game inquisitors were asking Larry Brown the same basic question: Allen Iverson.

Brown calls him "the little kid." The affection in his voice is obviously genuine. Sample: "He's got a lot of growing still to do, but he's grown so much. Everybody loves his toughness and loyalty and competitiveness. When he told me last summer that the things he and I had had issues about were all in his control, I got excited. There may have been a bad day or two, but my job has been a lot of fun."

Iverson has crept in behind Brown, and he splits his face into a large grin and mugs for the camera, nodding his head in agreement with all of Brown's flattery. Brown turns to see him, and smiles. Iverson walks away.

"Hey, he showed up!" Brown says, raising his voice deliberately. "How about that?"

And over his shoulder, Allen Iverson replies: "I heard that."

There follows delighted laughter.

"Nice to hear that sound, isn't it?" asks Larry Brown. Only he knows exactly how nice.
