Probably
after baltimore,
boston is my favorite town at least among places that are within
driving distance! I try to go at least once a year, usually to see the
celtics or the red sox (and tim who lives up taxachusetts). Boston has
plenty of sights and plenty of history, including quirky things that
I like such as the famous citgo sign (check out the sign's official
website!). I must admit, however, that I've never had a baked bean
or a cup of tea while in town.
There's lots
to do in boston, starting with sports. The celtics
were my favorite basketball team back in the 70s with john havlicek,
jo jo white and tiny archibald, continuing into the glory years in the
80s with the triumverate of bird, mchale, and parrish. And scrappy danny
ainge is probably one of my all-time favorite players. But the team
simply stinks in recent years, and they moved out of the fabled boston
garden too. I did get to a couple of games in the old garden, including
the final season in 1995. Check out my boston
garden pics.
Well
we still have fenway park, at least for a few more years (see my fenway
pics). I've been there a number of times to see the red
sox. (See my red sox pics from games I've attended in 2001
and 2005.)
I also have some pics of the red sox playing in camden
yards back in 1992.
After
the game, be sure to check out the boston
beer works across the street. This is a nice and spacious brewpub,
and they have a big selection of beer (see my around
town pics). And they have my favorite beer of all time
(don't laugh until you try it): bunker hill bluebeerry ale, with fresh
maine blueberries dropped into the glass. It's delicious.
There's
lots to do in boston besides sports. The north end has lots of great
(and cheap!) italian restaurants, plus the old
north church and the paul
revere house (see my history
pics). Not far from there is faneuil hall and the new
england aquarium. And of course, I must mention the bull
& finch pub for all of you tourists, which was the prototype
for the tv show "cheers". Don't want to stay indoors? Then
be sure to try the boston
duck tours, which are world war 2 era amphibious boats that tour
the city streets (see my duck
tours and charles
river pics), and then drop into the charles river for
a cruise in the water. Lots of fun!
