As you may know by now, I'm a big fan of John
Mellencamp. This album from 1996 finds its way into my
glove compartment periodically. Key West Intermezzo (I
Saw You First) is perhaps my Song of
the Year. It's a great tune about hanging out at a hotel
in Key West where "a loud Cuban band is crucifying John Lennon
[i.e., his music]" and finding the unattainable girl of your
dreams, who is "perched like a parrot, on his tuxedo shoulder;
Christ what's she doin' with him, she could be dancing with me; she
stirs the ice in her glass with her elegant finger; I want to be what
she's drinking, yeah I just want to be." Wow, I want to go to
Key West again soon!
