Very
quirky and funny comedy about three cons who escape from
a chain gang in the 1930s South. They wander from one nutty adventure
to the next and meet lots of funny Southern folk. In fact, just about
every conceivable Southern convention is trotted out here, many with
hilarious results. Besides the chain gang, we have a bible salesman
(John Goodman), blacks playing the blues, gangsters (Baby Face Nelson),
river baptisms, cigar smoking politicians (Charles Durning), and the
Ku Klux Klan. It's not as good as their previous effort (The
Big Lebowski), but it's still one of the best movies of a
disappointing year.
