The triple crown is my favorite (and only) time of year for horse racing. I've been to both the preakness and the belmont several times (see my preakness 97 page and belmont 03 pics). Both 2003 and 2004 were hearbreaking losses at the belmont for funny cide and smarty jones, where their triple crown dreams were dashed.
In 2005, I finally made it to churchill downs and the kentucky derby. This place was a lot of fun. I had my share of mint juleps, and I even won in the derby (betting $5 on closing argument to show, which paid about $65). Check out my derby 05 pics. And I was at the devastating preakness in 2006 when barbaro came up lame. Still no triple crown winner!
I also make a wager every year with Johnny Maz. We each pick a horse, usually avoiding any clear cut favorites. Whoever finishes better wins our big jackpot of $5. The only rule is that the horse must finish in the top 3 to win the bet. (We don't want to pay out if one horse finishes 12th and the other finishes 13th, since they're both off to the glue factory anyway!)
