Puerto
Rico is part of the USA, but of course very different than
anywhere else in the country. We visited it during the coldest
winter in memory, and it was in the 80s every day! Some
highlights of the trip:
Hyatt
Cerromar Beach.
This is where we stayed, about 40 minutes from downtown
San Juan. Nice, but a little too removed from the action
for my tastes. And the highly touted "lazy rizer"
pool isn't a loop you get to the end and have to
walk back to the starting point. Ugh!
The
Original Pina Colada. First made at the bar in
the Caribe Hilton, where the likes of Joan Crawford and
Errol Flynn used to hang out, I had to stop by and have
one or two. They were mighty tasty! Click the pina colada
at right for the original recipe.
Old
San Juan. Some great coffee shops and lots of
touristy stuff, including famous Fort
El Morro. Parking is tough in these narrow streets,
so we ended up in a garage on the edge of the area. Plan
extra time and wear your walking shoes.
Bacardi
Distillery Tour. Across the bay from
Old San Juan (a 7 minute ferry ride) and then a bus or cab
over to the tour. Nothing too exciting, but you do get 2
free samples of rum and a quick look at the bottling plant.
The
Coqui Frog.
This little guy makes lots of noise at night, but I loved
it! I even have a sound
clip of them near our hotel.
El
Yunque Rain Forest.
About 2 hours east of our hotel, this is the only rain forest
in the USA. It's sort of interesting, more so if you feel
like hiking. It rains all the time here, which I found amusing
when it actually started to rain. Worth checking out if
you have time to get away from San Juan for half a day or
so.
