I saw The Wallflowers in concert
at the Camden E-Centre back in the summer of 97, and they were an
excellent opening act for the Counting Crows. With this album, expect
them to be headlining. It picks up where their 1996 effort Bringing
Down the Horse left off.
As everyone knows,
the lead singer of the Wallflowers is Jakob Dylan, son of Bob. A lot
of the songs sound like Mellencamp at his best, or maybe the Smithereens.
And some songs even sound like Dylan. I'm not kidding! The rockers
are very good, but some of the slow stuff doesn't work for me (just
as Dylan Bob isn't always my cup of tea). But the album features what
is my Song of the Year: Letters from the
Wasteland. Check it out. It's a great moody
song in the Mellencamp / Dylan tradition.
