I
was a little leery of this movie, because after all, it
stars Tom Cruise (playing, improbably, a young, cocky guy!). But it
also has Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz, so I was willing to give
it a shot. The story is confusing and terrifying, but without a doubt
compelling. Cruise plays a guy who dumps Diaz for Cruz, but Diaz won't
let go. On top of this, Cruise has some terrifying dreams, that we
realize are dreams only when he wakes up. As the movie progresses,
we're not sure what are dreams and what is reality, and we're not
sure we're seeing things in sequential order. Like Rogert Ebert mentions
in his review, there are a lot of comparisons to Memento
and Mulholland Drive, two
other movies that I liked. Only the thrown together, unsatisfying
ending lowered my rating a bit. It's one of those endings you feel
the director has added just to tie the story together and come to
an end, but it doesn't fit the movie's overall theme. Still, this
movie is definitely worth a look.
